The Festival for Geist, Democracy and History

Every autumn, when we invite international experts from the humanities and social sciences to a Rendez-vous, the past becomes vivid, challenging and controversial. Whether it’s the storming of the Bastille, the civilising break of the Shoa, the first attempts at democracy in Europe, the transatlantic relationship or the recent German-German past – the topics of our discussion panels are wide-ranging and invite us to engage with history anew every year.

At our festival in the centre of Weimar, which is unique in Germany, you can listen and join in the discussion for three days. Films and film discussions are just as thought-provoking as concerts and readings, and our guests – contemporary witnesses, artists and diplomats – bring the past vividly and personally to mind. Free of charge, of course. A special focus of the history festival, generously funded by the Federal Commissioner for Culture and the Media, the State Chancellery of Thuringia and the City of Weimar is the communication of the history of democracy in Germany and Europe.
